Activities abound

Starting at a new school is always exciting because you never know quite what will happen next. That was certainly true during ‘activities week’ which happened during the  five days prior to the mid semester break. There was a mini sports morning where the children rotated through different activities including throw the wet sponge at the teacher and teaching assistant! Fortunately KG are notoriously poor shots however this was done at such close range so they could hardly miss.

The following day we enjoyed a circus skills show. I had a bit of a walk/dance on stilts. They were just like the ones my grandfather made me. It was good to discover that I still had the knack of using them. It amused my class too.

Outside one recess we watched juggling with flaming torches. Health and safety would probably intervene in the UK I suspect.

The week closed with a theatre production acted by the teachers, again on the school field. I’m Andrew and my colleague is Peter and we are fishing.

My favourite KG magic moment during this week was when a little Ethiopian child collected some big stones and arranged them around a ‘sit and ride’ car that we had out in the playground.

On Addis roads, you rarely see warning triangles. Instead there are handy boulders all down the sides of the ring road. When a vehicle breaks down people arrange these around the obstruction. Unfortunately they are a hazard to be avoided when they are not being used for this purpose especially at night. My little pupil had been observant.

I am soooo impressed you can walk on stilts, my balance us so bad just looking at someone on them sends me dizzying! Hope you both had a refreshing time in Tanzania.

Best wishes

I am pretty sure there was a stash of stilts like that at primary school - I think they are a great playground toy but probably too 'dangerous' for children these days.  I love the little magic moment.  It is the best when you suddenly realise that what seems to be a random thing to do in play is a child learning to understand the world around them.

Why stop at stilts tightrope walking next!!  Aren't those little moments precious , I love watching the children role play at the nurseries I visit , the best way of assessing their understanding of the world around them! Enjoy the next semester , as we will continue to enjoy your blogs xx thank you

Hay Dad and Mum,

Dave, Alice, G'ma and I just looked through your pictures.  They are amazing.  It looks like you had a fantastic time.  I am looking forward to seeing the other 2.5 million shots.

Love you both,

Aaron
