Making History

When we were last in Ethiopia, The school had an area of woodland in part of its campus. Over time this has been removed and a lovely new building erected. It will house the High School teachers and students giving them purpose built facilities and greater identity. This week we had the grand opening. The ceremony included speeches, ribbon cutting and five high school students prayed in their home languages representing the diversity of the Bingham community. There was an opportunity for parents, visitors and students to look around for themselves. I was assigned to show people round the ground floor. The proceedings concluded with traditional Ethiopian refreshments.

The building has been named the 'Gowan Centre' after Walter Gowan who was a missionary in Africa in the 1800's along with Rowland Bingham, from whom the whole school derives its name.Walter's vision resulted in the formation of the Sudan Interior Mission. This mission merged with several others to become the Society for International Ministries. SIM today stands for Serving in Mission, our supporting charity.

It is so great to see the desks in the new building and to hear about the opening. I just finished reading a book about Rowland Bingham and learned about Walter Gowan. He died in the Sudan area on his first or second trip. It was his mother who supported Rowland Bingham in his effort to begin SIM. It is a story really worth reading. We are sorry to have missed the opening but feel blessed that we were able to tour the building before we left. It will certainly change the atmosphere at Bingham for the middle and high school teachers and students.
Great to hear about the opening.
